Let's Review
- Copyright provides the owner or author of creative work the exclusive rights to their work. The author/owner can choose who has access to their work, how their work is used or shared, and to receive economic value of their work. This is true regardless of whether the work is published or not published.
- We have also learned that there is a time limit on copyrights and that some work is not under the copyright protection (facts, government works, etc.)
- We have looked at citations as a way of using some copyrighted material but there are limitations.
There are ways in which creators of copyrighted material share their material. They are through
- Creative Commons
- Open Source
- Open Access
Creative Commons
Creative Commons licenses gives all creators a standardized way to grant the public access to their creative work under the copyright law. The creator controls the rights but through Creative Commons, the rights are easier to understand resulting in less chance of violation.
