Online Tools
Introduction
Many of the offline tools we used a few years ago are now online. These tools are sometimes referred to as Web 2.0 Tools. Web 2.0 is a term used to describe a variety of web sites and applications that allow you to create and share online information and material which you have created. To use web 2.0 tools, you must be connected to the Internet to create. These tools can often be download in some format for storage. Here are just a few Web 2.0 tool categories:
- Bookmark Managers -examples are Diigo, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, etc.
- Classroom Tools – examples are Animoto, Grammarly, SlideShare, etc.
- Collaboration – examples are Edmodo, Gliffy, Skype, etc.
- Office Tools – examples are Office 365, Google docs, bitly, Cute PDF, Google calendar, etc.
- Digital Storytelling – examples are StoryJumper, Tikatok, StoryBird, etc
- Comic Strip Creation – examples are toondoo, storyboardthat, etc
- Website Creation – examples are google sites, wordpress, tumblr, etc.
And so many more.
Infographic
Web 2.0 Tools have many functions but one we want to focus on is the infographic. An infographic is a collection of imagery, charts, and minimal text that gives an easy-to-understand overview of a topic. Infographics are:
- built to inform others
- should be easy to read
- contain images/charts/clipart/etc.
- contain a combination of words and short sentences
- heading to inform
Here are three infographics from College Board. The images and charts were cited with the documents in different fashions.
In this course, we will cite on infographics using numbers in the lower right corners of images or charts for consistency like (1), where the 1 will refer to a reference document that contains the 1 followed by the URL of the image or chart and then the date accessed. Why date accessed? Because information on the internet can be changed. By adding to the URL the data accessed, you are identifying that the information you are referencing was there as of the date you provide.
