Notes and Vocabulary Help

Note: words/phrases that are in bold are explained in the Notes section

Unus ex officiis Decimi erat ludos parare. Imperator Titus Decimo nonnulla consilia dedit, sed imperavit, “Perfice consilia et crea cetera. Circumspice locum et aedificium. Tenebitne aquam? Quantos populos tenebit? Multi populi venient; itaque necesse est nobis aedificium meum perficere. Tandem, inveni informationem de animalibus.”

  • Unus ex officiis - One of the duties
  • Quantos populos - How many people
  • necesse est nobis aedificium meum perficere - it is necessary for us to complete... (alternative: We must complete...)
  • informationem - information (informatio, informationis, f.)

Decimus magna cum diligentia laboravit. Primus, amphitheatrum conspexit. Amphitheatrum novum, nomine Amphitheatrum Flavianum, erat magnum et pulchrum! Fabricatores aedificium totum magna cum cura aedificaverant. Secundus fabricatores rogavit, “Tenetne aquam?”

Unus ex fabricatoribus respondit, “Minima. Fortasse erit, sed non nunc.”

Decimus dixit, “Ita. Tibi gratias. Quantos populos tenet?”

Fabricator: “Multa milia! Est paene satis spatium in caveis Romae toti*!”

Decimus informationem descripsit et fabricatores reliquit.

*The builder is exaggerating. In reality, the Colosseum seated between 50,000-80,000 people. Rome, at this time, had a population approaching a million people.

  • Amphitheatrum Flavianum - the Flavian Amphitheater = the Colosseum
  • Secundus - Next
  • Est - There is...
  • satis - enough
  • Romae toti - for the whole of Rome
  • descripsit - (Decimus) wrote down (describo, describere, descripsi, descriptum)

Tertius, Decimus informationem de animalibus petivit. In ludis, alii gladiatores, nomine bestiarii, contra animalia, alii contra viros pugnaverunt. Animalia contra animalia cetera interdum pugnaverunt. Ludi multa animalia requisiverunt. Decimus domitorem invenit et rogavit, “Quanta animalia ludi habebunt?”

  • alii gladiatores...alii - some gladiators...others
  • pugnaverunt - the verb is used with both subjects. Read/translate this as alii gladiatores pugnaverunt contra animalia; alii (gladiatores) pugnaverunt contra viros
  • interdum - sometimes
  • requisiverunt - (Ludi) required... (requiro, requirere, requisivi, requisitus)
  • domitorem - animal handler

Domitor respondit, “Multa animalia habeo! Quattuor zebrae duas bigas tractabunt. Decem aperos habeo. Sex leones cum captivis pugnabunt. Unum rhinocerotem etiam obtinui! Est magnus! Quoque habeo: septendecim simias, tres tauros, duos pardos, et unum camelopardum. Alia animalia ab Africa venerunt, alia Romam ab Asia Minore advenerunt. Copia animalium tres dies permanebit.”

Decimus informationem iterum descripsit et domitorem reliquit. Amphitheatrum et ludi erant perfecti!

  • bigas - two-horse chariot (biga, bigae, f.)
  • tractabunt - (Quattuor zebrae) will pull... (tracto, tractare, tractavi, tractatus)
  • aperos - wild boars
  • simias - monkeys
  • tauros - bulls
  • pardos - panthers
  • camelopardum - giraffe
  • Alia animalia...alia - Some animals...others...
  • Romam - to Rome (note: accusative of place to which)
  • Copia animalium - The supply of animals (note: partitive genitive)
  • tres dies - for three days (note: accusative of extent of time)
  • permanebit - (Copia animalium) will last... (permaneo, permanere, permansi, permansus)
