AQU: Lesson - Declining a Noun Vs. Conjugating a Verb

Declining a Noun vs. Conjugating a Verb

As you have probably already noticed, Latin spends a lot of time talking about endings! We learned verb endings for three tenses in an earlier lesson, and now, we've learned about three cases (so far!), each with a singular and plural ending. Often in this course, you will be asked to work with these endings, putting them onto various nouns. This is a critical part of learning Latin - and yes, we get it: it's a lot to take in! And there are a lot of new terms floating around, so take a moment to write the following two directions in your notes - put these terms somewhere you will be able to find them again easily!

  • Conjugate a verb - this is what it is called when we want you to put endings on a verb. You will often be given specifics: conjugate the verb X in Y tense (example: Conjugate the verb amo, amare in the Present Tense - this means you would put the six present tense endings on the verb amo, amare).
    • Notice that you aren't necessarily going to be given additional information, like the conjugation (category) of the verb - it's up to you to notice the important information built into the dictionary entry.
  • Decline a noun - this is what it is called when we want you to put endings on a noun. You will often be given specifics: decline the noun X (example: Decline the noun puella, puellae, f. - this means you would put the correct noun endings on puella, puellae).
    • Notice, you aren't necessarily going to be told additional information, like the declension (category) of the noun - it's up to you to notice the important information built into the dictionary entry.

Noun Endings - Updated Charts

Below are two noun charts, reviewing the noun endings we've learned so far. Also, pay careful attention to how the chart is set up - you will be learning that the full set of noun endings should be written in a particular order, and this chart is building up to that final order. Be sure you're keeping notes on these endings, as you will be asked to use and recognize them frequently in this course!
