FAM: Lesson - Cardinal Numbers
Cardinal Numbers
In additional to Roman numerals, you will need to be familiar with the cardinal numbers in Latin. Cardinal numbers are adjectives and are used for counting (one, two, three, etc.). For Latin 1, please take the time to become familiar with the following numbers:
1-10 | 11-20 | 30-100 (by decades); 1000 |
---|---|---|

Nota bene:
- Did you notice what happened for 18 and 19? For 11-17, we used the ones digit (modified) and added -decim (unus + decim = undecim). But for 18 and 19, we use viginti (20) and subtract from it:
- duodeviginti = 18
- duo = 2
- de = from
- viginti = 20
- undeviginti - one from twenty = 19
- duodeviginti = 18
- Every -8 and -9 digit will work like this in the tens by adding duode- or unde- to the decade. Additional examples:
- duodetriginta = 28 (two from 30)
- undenonaginta = 89 (one from 90)
