In the previous lesson, we learned that first conjugation verbs have the endings -o, -are in the first 2 principal parts. As you learn these verbs, please take note of the common endings for each verb. Pay particular attention to the verbs dare (3rd PP: dedi) and stare (3rd PP: steti) and notice that they do not follow the pattern of third principal parts of First Conjugation Verbs. It is important to practice studying your vocabulary words. You might consider printing the vocabulary list for your notes. Some students find it helpful to make note cards. Also pay close attention to the English derivatives and common expressions found in the handout.

Nota bene:

  • English Derivatives - A derivative is something that comes from something before. Here these English words come directly from Latin words. Look closely for the 'hidden' Latin root word inside each English word and meaning. Example:
    • Latin Verb: Ambulo - I walk.
    • English Derivative: Amble - 'amb' from Latin, this English word means to walk slowly.
  • Common Latin Expressions - these expressions remind us that Latin is used daily. These expressions and abbreviations are important to know.
