Manifest Destiny and Pre-Civil War

Introduction

In the period before the Civil War new opportunities and a desire for more territory led to westward expansion. New struggles between Native Americans and white settlers in the west as the relentless push westward encroached on ancestral lands and conflicts erupted among United States citizens over additional states, slavery and the balance of power in Congress emerged. Ultimately the issue of slavery divided the nation. The 1860s began with the outbreak of civil war.
