Is a Photogram the Same as Instagram?

So far in this module, we’ve explored the elements & principles and how they relate to creating strong photographic compositions and we’ve learned the basics of how photographic technology developed to where we are today. This lesson is focused on creating a record of and reflecting on what you’ve learned through your first Visual Verbal Journal and creating your first project – a Photogram!!

Video Information:

Photograms are images created without the use of a camera. Photograms use light in addition to the principles and elements of photography to create compositions.

Visual Verbal Journaling

We’ll take a quick look!

How to Make a Visual Verbal Journal

Video Information:

Creating a VVJ is a way to use writing as a form of drawing. It's similar to a sketchbook but different. It is a type of journal showing visual thinking. Journals are personally meaningful. A VVJ includes sketches, drawings, words, photographs, meaningful symbols, and collages. VVJ's can be used for research, ideas, reflections, and explorations.

Cyanotype Paper For the Win!

While Man Ray used silver gelatin paper and a traditional black & white process, you’ll be using cyanotype paper – this requires far less processing. In fact, all you need is the precoated paper from your supply kit, sunlight, and water!

So, let’s learn a little more about what cyanotype is and the steps you’ll need to follow to create one.

Video Information:

The steps for creating a photogram are

  3. Arrange composition inside
