The 1996 Olympics
Introduction
The 1996 Centennial Olympics gave Georgia the opportunity to shine for the world. This specific event marked the 100th celebration of the Olympics. The state had made significant changes politically and socially and the Olympics would display all that the state, specifically Atlanta, had to offer the world community. It brought 197 nations and numerous spectators to the state.
1996 Olympics
- In 1996, Atlanta hosted the Centennial Summer Olympic Games.
- The Centennial Olympics recognized the hundredth anniversary of the modern Olympics.
- This Olympic ceremony brought attention and investment to Georgia from all over the world.
- With the opening of the Games, Atlanta welcomed 197 nations, as well as countless spectators to the city.
Atlanta Improves
- Existing sports venues were renovated and additional venues were constructed. The Olympic infrastructure increased not only in Atlanta, but throughout the state as well.
- Downtown Atlanta began an improvement plan with new sidewalks, trees, and the 21-acre Centennial Park located in the heart of the city, all funded by the federal government.
- The Olympic Stadium became the new home for the Atlanta Braves.
- The city built new dormitories for Olympic athletes and are now used by local universities.
Economic Benefit
- 72 million visitors came to Atlanta.
- The estimated impact of the Olympics on Atlanta was over five billion dollars.
- The Olympics allowed Atlanta to increase its reputation for tourism, commerce, and sports.
Moving Towards the New Century
- New jobs and facilities were created throughout the state for the Olympics. Many of these are used by the state’s universities.
- The government increased its revenue through taxes, which was then spent on providing services and programs for Georgia’s citizens.
- Since the Olympics, many businesses have relocated to Georgia.
