CWR - Reconstruction (Lesson)
Reconstruction
Introduction
Reconstruction lasted from 1867 until 1877. The South was left in ruins and major cities and farms had been destroyed. The South’s labor force was weakened because 25% of the white male population were killed in action and the slaves were freed from the Emancipation Proclamation, resulting in the loss of most of the South’s labor supply. The railroads which supported the economic prosperity of agriculture had been destroyed during the war. The period of Reconstruction consisted of rebuilding, but it also brought an era of political distress and conflict.

Review
Review what you've learned by completing the activity below.
While the battles of the Civil War came to a close, Georgia and the rest of the South now had to deal with the consequences facing them in Reconstruction. (The United States government had been planning Reconstruction and how to readmit the Southern states to the Union months before the war actually ended in April 1865.) The Civil War is often called the first “modern war”. It saw many firsts such as the first successful submarine, ironclad naval vessels, flame throwers, repeating rifles, organizing black troops into combat, wide scale use of rail service, bugle calling taps, the first photographs taken during battle, the establishment of the American Red Cross as well as new medical treatments and medicines in addition to new hygiene practices for safer surgery.
The United States now had to rebuild and reconnect as a united country.
