Georgia's Location and Region

Introduction

Map of Georgia Elevations From the mountain ranges to our sandy beaches, Georgia has distinct features that set it apart from other states. Our exact latitude-longitude of 32 degrees north, 82 degrees west set Georgia apart from other Southern states. Five distinct regions carve out the features of Georgia. The coastal plain covers 60% of the state. In prehistoric times it was covered by ocean. Its interior boundary is the fall line. The Piedmont region is the second largest region, covering 30% of the state. It is filled with rolling hills and valleys and known for its famous “Georgia Red Clay”. The Blue Ridge Mountain Ridge is located at the foot of the famous Appalachian Mountain Range and is home to the highest point in Georgia, Brasstown Bald. The Ridge and Valley region has become famous for its textile and carpet manufacturing in recent years, but it also accounts for 4% of Georgia’s farmlands. The Appalachian Plateau, the smallest region in Georgia, contains the state's only coal resources.
