Image of Eurasia

Let’s review our geographic themes of Location, Place, and Region. Remember that Location can be described as absolute location, which involves latitude and longitude, or relative location, which describes where a place is in comparison with other places. Asia covers the land between the longitudes of 10 degrees North and 80 degrees north and stretches from the latitude of 40 degrees east to the International Date Line. With regards to its relative location, Asia is located in the Eastern and Northern Hemispheres and makes up the eastern side of a vast landmass known as Eurasia. In describing Asia's Place, you could point out that it is located south of the Arctic Ocean, west of the Pacific Ocean, north of the Indian Ocean, and east of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains.

Take Away

The geography of Southern and Eastern Asia is as diverse as the culture of the region. The vast mountain regions, deserts, water sources, and weather patterns (monsoons) all affect or impact the economy, the environment, and numerous aspects of daily life. As we dive deeper into the other elements of the region, it will become more apparent that geography impacts what is produced, how it is transported, and the overall economic prosperity of the area.
