CN - Canada's Economic Concerns (Lesson)
Canada's Economic Concerns
Introduction
Canada's economy is similar to our economy here in the United States. Like the United States, Canada has a free market economy. Although Canada's government is limited in the involvement in the economy, the government does provide its citizens with many services such as healthcare. Canada's government also controls major organizations such as electrical companies, transportation services, and public broadcasting from becoming too powerful.

Research more about NAFTA using the video available in the Additional Module Resources found at the start of this course as well as any research you would like to do - Be sure to ask your teacher for some suggested sites to start if you need to!
Please note - NAFTA was replaced with the USMCA in 2019. (USMCA stands for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.) Many of the features of NAFTA were carried over into the USMCA. As you research you may see both terms, your task is to look at the original agreement - NAFTA - as a historic free trade agreement. Please consult with your instructor if you need help finding resources to complete this task.
Your challenge is to determine the following:
- What were some benefits of NAFTA?
- What were some drawbacks of NAFTA?
- Do you think these nations will continue to be a part of NAFTA/USMCA? Why or Why not?
Canada today is a “melting pot” of French, British and indigenous heritage and culture and those roots influence the people of today as they move forward and attempt to preserve and conserve the environment and Canada’s natural resources while navigating the economic issues facing the country.
