LAH - Latin America's History Module Overview
Latin America's History
Introduction
For thousands of years many groups have settled Latin America including Europeans, Africans, Asians and Native Americans. These groups have had a direct influence on Latin America's history, culture, and lifestyle in various parts of the region.
In this module, we will explore how European contact changed the cultural landscape of Latin America. While the early civilizations were destroyed, there remains some continuity seen through existing societies. Conflict and change are exemplified through the ideas and impact of revolutionary leaders. You will explore how the movement and migration of people during the building of colonial empires resulted in an economic and cultural legacy.
Questions to consider as you study this module:
- What impact did Europeans have when they encountered Native Americans in Latin America?
- What influence did African slavery have on the development of the Americas?
- What influence did the Spanish and the Portuguese have on the language and religions of Latin America?
- How are Toussaint L'Ouverture, Simon Bolivar, and Miguel Hidalgo important to Latin America's independence movements?
