GS - Conflict and Change (Lesson)

Conflict and Change

Introduction

Have you ever had an argument with a friend or family member? What did you do to make it better? Did anything change as a result of the conflict?

Conflict is defined as a disagreement and it can be between individuals or groups of people or countries. Over time conflicts can lead to change.

In this class we will examine conflict in terms of how it changes societies and cultures. The changes can be positive or negative; and sometimes change can be both positive and negative at the same time in different ways.

What is Conflict and Change?

Conflicts between societies have occurred throughout the world since the beginning of time.

When conquerors invade a region, they spread their culture, language and religion throughout the conquered area. Many times the culture of the invaders mixes with the culture of the conquered and creates a new and different culture altogether.

One example of this mixing and changing is languages. Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian are all Latin-based languages and originated in the Roman Empire.

Throughout history, cultures have spread through migration, trade, and conquest. The spreading of cultures from one society to another is called cultural diffusion.

Latin was originally a spoken language in Rome. Rome conquered Europe between the 1st and the 5th century B.C.E. As a result of the conquests, Latin became the base language for many regions in Europe. These languages developed into the modern languages of Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian that are spoken today.

Think About This

Conflict and change have occurred throughout time. For example, you read about the languages that spread throughout the Roman Empire as a result of conquest. Consider how conflicts and changes have occurred in United States history such as the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
