Resolving Legal Disputes Module Overview

Introduction

Up to this point, we have learned about a variety of ethical concepts and how ethics relate to the law. We have talked about why law is necessary. In this module we will look at the courts that uphold our law. The U. S. court system is actually made up of many court systems. Our U. S. courts are divided into the federal court system and fifty separate state court systems. You will be introduced to the federal and state court systems and the various courts within those systems, as well as their jurisdictions. This module will provide you with information on the types of cases heard in the federal and state courts. We will also focus on some of the landmark cases that have made a significant impact on the judicial processes in our country. Lastly, we will briefly discuss some alternatives to lawsuits and courtroom litigation and ways of using creative settlement techniques.

In this module, we will study the following topics:

Federal Court Systems
In this microlesson we will be looking at the federal courts system. You will be introduced to the structure of the federal court system and its jurisdictions. Federal courts hear cases involving federal matters and issues involving diversity of citizenship.

State Court Systems
In this lesson, we will take a brief look at the State Court System's function and purpose.

Alternatives to Litigation
In this lesson we will review some of the avenues of dispute resolution.

Types of Claims and Landmark Cases
In this lesson, we will review some of the major landmark cases that have shaped history and have an impact on our society even today.
