Representation of Data

A box and whisker plot uses a 5-number summary to display the data. The five numbers used are the minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum.

Let's practice making one:

This table lists the total number of home runs hit at home games by each baseball team in a specific region:

First, we should find the 5 important numbers that represent the data: Minimum, First Quartile, Median, Third Quartile, Maximum.

We could also take that set of data and make a dot plot to represent the scores. A dot plot is a way to display a distribution of data where each data value is shown as a dot or mark above a number line. The dot plot below shows the distribution of the baseball team's home runs.

Another way to represent data is by a histogram. A histogram is a way to display data as a bar graph. Watch this video to practice constructing a histogram. The class width of a histogram is the width of each bar in a histogram.
