Factors in Design

Introduction

WhatIf.png

What makes one product design superior over another?

How does one come up with the latest technical application that changes everything?

Answers to these questions represent the genius of any technological solution and the distinct value of engineers as problem solvers.

In this lesson students will investigate the initial steps of the engineering design process by examining the factors in the design process that lead to a successful design solution. Students will learn though examples and the application of the steps of the design process to the hands-on Cardboard Chair Design Challenge.

At the conclusion of this lesson students will complete and submit the Cardboard Chair Design Challenge – Proposal Assignment.

Needs for new product development can come from customer service or sales, marketing studies, personal ideas and inspirations, or even a design challenge such as your Cardboard Chair Design Challenge assignment. Regardless of the source the process for determining a sound design is the same. The initial steps in the engineering design solution for determining the best solution is critical to the entire process of product development. Therefore, do not rush to design and build without thoroughly completing these vital factors in design.

You will use this process in detail for your Cardboard Chair Challenge assignment. Reference the Cardboard Chair Challenge Overview document throughout this lesson located under the Resources book icon.

Who is in the Product Design Team?

The design team is composed of individuals from different functions and/or have different roles within a company. In very many cases, engineers and technical people can fulfill all these roles. Each functional group will have its own team of individuals providing specific roles to support that functional organization.

This team includes:

- Marketing (to understand and communicate customer desires, pricing, competition and sales opportunity)

- Manufacturing (to ensure the product can be economically created or provide alternative options like outsourcing)

- Research & Design (engineers and technologists who have the specific technological knowledge in the disciplines required to create the product. Examples: electrical, mechanical, computer, etc.)

- Leadership (product managers, organizational managers)

-Others as appropriate

Each individual has specific skills appropriate and needed to optimize the design of the product solution.
