Tool Safety Lesson

Introduction

Power tools are an important component of modern society. They enable faster and more accurate completion of difficult tasks used in construction. For example, the marble cutter shown here makes short time out of the marble slab if the correct blade and cutting process is used. In addition, this cutter ensures more consistent precision cuts for uniform look because of the reliable output. However, the speed of the rotating blade and of the cut materials are very hazardous and require skilled operation.

Proper and safe use of tools and machines are an important topic in engineering classes and will be generally covered in this lesson. Note that this course cannot cover every machine nor every situation. In this course, students will learn basic principles of safe operations and maintenance with tools and machines, but this course DOES NOT certify or qualify any student to operate any specific tool or machine. Certification is accomplished through other means.

Industry experts find major causes of power tool accidents are through inattention through repetition, unexpected events, inexperience, or overconfidence. (Teaching General Power Tool Safety, powertoolinstitute.com, Nov 14, 2017).

  • Inattention through repetition  most likely occurs in a production setting where the operator performs the same task over and over. Even with a deadline it is best to take a break from the repetition so not to get drawn in and lose focus.
  • Unexpected events  happen quickly with the high rpm machines. This can happen from a kickback situation, an operator’s hand or finger might rapidly be drawn in to the spinning blade, or the operator might become distracted by something and while not thinking put the hand near the blade. Best solutions for this are preparation from experience. Do not use the tool unless you are qualified and officially checked out on it. Use jigs and fixtures to manage the workpiece instead of using fingers.
  • Inexperience or Overconfidence causes the operator to take risky shortcuts that can lead to loss of finger or life. Do not use the tool without being qualified and checked out by someone highly experienced with the operation of the device. Seasoned users of the tool must remember the day he/she stops being fearful or loses respect of the machine is when accidents will likely happen.

Bottom line: Stay safe with the power tool by using your common sense. Watch this video for other important safety considerations. Remember to respect the tool, be smart, and stay focused.

Tool Maintenance

The tool operator’s manual will specify the maintenance routine and requirements for that tool. Rule #1 is to read and follow the instructions in the manual! It will tell you how to use the tool properly and what accessories are appropriate for its use. The operator’s manual will provide the guidance to keep the tool working safely and effectively. However, there are maintenance items common among tools.

  • Inspect the tool or machine prior to use. Verify all parts are working correctly prior to putting any workpiece material to the tool. Label the tool as broken and immediately report the condition.
  • Do not take shortcuts or rig a tool or machine to make it run. Have it properly repaired.
  • Ensure the labels and nameplates stay ON the tool. These are vital for identification and important information.
  • Maintain the accessories and keep them organized and in good order. Blades and bits should stay sharp and clean.
  • Perform regular maintenance on the tool per the operator’s manual. Use the oils and cleaning agents specified.
  • Clean and store the tool safely when the work is complete. Gather all the accessories and put them up too. Put the tools and accessories in a location out of reach of children and inexperienced users.

Now since you have gone through all the basic safety information, it is time to overview a few tools and appropriate applications. Review and become familiar with the following tools and machines, and understand the correct applications for each.
