Safety

Safety signs and labels come in different colors and shapes. The colors and shapes are generally standardized to provide immediate recognition of the significance of the message being conveyed by the sign or label. Safety signs consider six levels of information. These levels are ranked by the category of severity for potential harm. These are:

The following list identifies the typical significance of each color and shape. Obtain the Power Tool Institute, inc (PTI) Safety- Symbols handout from "Resources" for supplemental use.

Manufacturing, assembly, and production areas are required to use specialized floor tape to mark off specific areas. The purpose is to distinguish safe pathways or dangerous areas. Note the relationship of the color schemes to what you have learned about the colors of signs. Review the image and consider the color combinations and how those might be appropriate from what you have just learned about the colors used in signage. For example, note the yellow for hazards and the red for fire areas.
