Engineering Applications 

Introduction

Consider major technological innovation. How does world changing technological development and engineering actually occur?

As you watch the NOVA Great Human Odyssey: Early Boat Technology video clip consider the social, economic, and environmental factors that defined the need and continued pursuit for improvement in boat design. Also watch the steps of problem solving, and resultant technological learning for each subsequent design that finally led to the creation of the catamaran.

 

Students will create a working model of a medieval trebuchet.

Material Requirement: The Trebuchet lesson will include a project to design and build a model trebuchet to launch a small projectile such as a grape. Construction will be from a rigid material of student choice. Material suggestions include and are not limited to: wooden dowels, small wood strips, popsicle sticks, small wood, or pieces of PVC. Hardware and fasteners will be required.
