How We Use Energy

The average human requires about per 2000 kCal day in order to sustain life processes – reproduction, growth, metabolism, etc. In order to sustain that energy every day we consume food, as our cells undergo cellular respiration and energy stored in bonds is released to run our body.

So where do we get all of the energy to run our things?

Get Energized!

Remember that energy is the ability to do work or bring about a change. Work is what happens when energy is transferred from one system to another. Energy exists in many forms, such as heat, light, chemical energy, and electrical energy. 

If you read a book beneath a lit lamp, that lamp has energy from electricity. The energy to make the electricity comes from fuel. Fuel is any material that can release energy in a chemical change.

Putting Energy To Work

Most of our energy comes from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are formed from the remains of long-dead organisms that now serve as an energy source, such as oil, coal, or natural gas. As fossil fuels become harder to find, scientists are looking for new energy sources to power our lives.

Energy can be further classified into two categories:

Renewable Resources

Non-Renewable Resources

An energy source that is inexhaustible.

Examples: Solar Power, wind, water, geothermal

An energy source which is exhaustible.

Examples: fossil fuels, nuclear energy, oil

    • Thermal Energy - Thermal energy refers to the energy contained within a system that is responsible for its temperature.
    • Mechanical Energy - Mechanical energy is the sum of kinetic and potential energy in an object that is used to do work. In other words, it is energy in an object due to its motion or position, or both.
    • Electrical energy- Electrical energy is defined as an electric charge that lets work be accomplished.
  • Nonrenewable resources are ones that are exhaustible and renewable resources are ones that are inexhaustible.
