Ecological Succession

Does Succession mean Success?

Ecological succession is the process of change in the species found in an ecological community over time.

Succession is the cause of changes in an ecosystem which can lead to changes in the species found in that ecosystem. The consequences of this change can sometimes be a subtle and sometimes an overt alteration of the environment.

Change is a Good Thing!

In the world of ecology, the only constant is change - but change can be good.

The video below explains ecological succession and how ecological communities change over time to become beautiful, biodiverse mosaics.

Let's Recap!

The conditions in an ecosystem are dynamic, and as its environment changes so does the structure of its communities. A pattern of change often emerges when an ecosystem is drastically affected.

Use the presentation below for a review of these pattern changes:

The typical view of ecological succession is that it is an orderly sequence in which each stage leads to the next until a climax community is reached.

Before You Go, You Need to Know

The following key points are from this explore section of the lesson. You must know the following information before moving to the next lesson. This is just a summary of the key points.

  • Ecological succession is the process in which a community changes through time.
  • Primary succession occurs in an area that has never before been colonized.
  • Secondary succession occurs in a formerly inhabited area that was disturbed.
