Management Styles


Autocratic style includes decision makers, power, one-way communication, rewards and penalties, little delegation, used for unskilled workers who are not trusted and ideas aren't valued. Paternalistic style includes parent/child relationship, little delegation, explains reason for their decisions, expects loyalty, trust and obedience, cares about employees, makes all decisions. Laissez-faire style provides tools and resources, little guidance, much input is desired, employees solve problems, good for skilled employees that are highly motivated, good for creativity. Democratic style is participative, has relationship building, trust between labor and management, increased productivity, increased creativity and collaboration, and is focused on goals. 

Exploring Management Styles

Management Styles include four basic management styles. Autocratic. An autocratic leader is always in charge. They set rules and expect everyone to follow them without question. This type of leader is very controlling. Paternalistic. A paternalistic leader is like a parent/child relationship. This type of leader is still authoritarian, but does explain to the employees why he/she makes decisions. Democratic. The democratic leader gets input from his/her employees. This is a participatory management style and this manager will include employees to get them to "buy in" to the decision. Laissez-faire. The Laissez-faire manager is basically hands-off. This manager trusts their employees to do their job without oversight and too much interference by management. This manager will delegate what needs to be done. The manager does oversee their employees from a distance, but doesn't dictate how to do what needs to be done. 

In this video you will learn some of the most important traits entrepreneurs must have. Entrepreneurs need to develop their leadership style to be what works best for their situation. That means they may vary some in their style according to the need.
