Art Journal

It is now time to complete your art journal for this module!

  • For your art journal pages, you will fill one full page in your sketchbook for each module.
  • Think of your subject matter first.
  • Refer to the list of prompts to help you get started.
  • To start, use a magazine page, solid color, newspaper, or your imagination.
  • Figure out your general composition. Do you want to put items in a grid, in columns, have a border or a radial design? After you have that part figured out,
  • It’s important to establish a background, midground, and foreground. So, please don’t just draw a cool character with no environment to stand-in. Think about the whole page.
  • Pick your medium. What do you want to use? I’m a fan of using whatever you have on hand. You can collage with just some junk mail and a glue stick. Or you can create an amazing page with just a ballpoint pen.

When developing the art journal page, look at how you developed your composition, how much effort went into the content and idea, as well as into your craftsmanship. Yes, neatness matters. Think about your art journal pages like mini paintings or drawings. You want them to communicate an idea, story, feeling or some content.

Also, it’s important that the ideas are yours and yours alone. You don’t need to copy characters, logos or trends you see online. The ideas in your head are a lot better and more authentic to who you are. So, please don’t draw things that we see in mass media all the time. That doesn’t say anything about you.

Have fun with your art journals. Don’t forget to think about your subject matter, then your composition and medium. Compose your page with a background, midground, and foreground and enjoy the process.
