Artist Research

Research artwork pieces of artwork from either Vincent Van Gogh or Albrecht Durer. Find a piece by either artist that shows a strong use of line. Draw a picture of one of their works in your sketchbook. Focus on the line quality. How does it change to suit the content of the work? Were you able to draw the work accurately? Did you learn something about the artist’s process while drawing this work?

Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still life’s, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterized by bold colors and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

Albrech Dürer

Dürer's vast body of work includes engravings, his preferred technique in his later prints, altarpieces, portraits and self-portraits, watercolours and books. The woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), are more Gothic than the rest of his work. His well-known engravings include the Knight, Death and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation. His watercolours also mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium.
