Sol - Colligative Properties (Lesson)
Colligative Properties
Introduction
Colligative properties of solutions are properties that depend upon the concentration of solute molecules or ions, but not upon the identity of the solute dissolved in the solution. In this lesson we will investigate the effects of a solute on boiling point and freezing point.
In this segment of Chemistry Matters, the host discusses two of the colligative properties, freezing point depression and boiling point elevation. The students make ice cream to investigate colligative properties and solve problems to find the freezing point and boiling point of different substances. We also see how a Popsicle® manufacturer, King of Pops, makes their product.
