BCF - Ionic Naming and Formulas (Lesson)

Ionic Naming and Formulas

Introduction

In previous lessons, we determined the process for ionic bonding and many properties associated with ionic compounds. In this lesson we will learn to name and write formulas for various types of ionic compounds. Each section in this lesson will focus on one of the three basic types of ionic compounds. It should be noted that ionic compounds can be a combination of all three of these, but for the sake of simplicity, we will approach them in isolation. Examples of the three basic types are illustrated below:

Writing Ionic Formulas

The following video illustrates the process for writing formulas for simple binary ionic compounds. Remember that ionic compounds have an electronegativity difference greater than two. You may also notice that these compounds begin with a metal from the left side of the periodic table.

Criss-Cross Method

Criss Cross MethodThe following “Criss-Cross Method” works well when writing formulas for ionic compounds. Please note that the charges will cancel when they are opposite and equal.  Ex. Ca2+and S2-= Ca

Let’s take formula writing a step further. The following video will teach you to write formulas for ionic compounds containing transition metals (groups 3-12) and polyatomic ions (ions with more than one element).

Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals Practice

Please see examples of a chemical name and its chemical formula below.

This next video will teach you to write formulas for ionic compounds containing polyatomic ions (ions with more than one element).

Ionic Compounds Containing Polyatomic Ions Practice

Write the formula for the following ionic compounds containing Polyatomic Ions. Use your Ionic Charges Chart to help you identify the charges of each ion.
