Electrons in Atoms
Introduction
While electrons are so tiny that their masses barely affect the total mass of the atom, these tiny particles have a great effect on the properties of the elements that contain them. We will take a closer look at the role that electrons play in determining the properties of elements and determine ways to indicate the location of these significant particles that surround the nucleus.

A helpful way to remember the order to fill orbitals when writing electron configurations is the diagonal rule. Use the diagonal rule below to remember the order that the sublevels fill.
Another helpful way to visualize the sublevels is by understanding the layout of the periodic table based on the s, p, d, and f “blocks.”
