Introduction-

How can formulas increase the power of your spreadsheet? No matter how great your data may be, it’s the data analysis that really matters. Can you imagine doing all calculations manually? Excel makes even complex calculations look easy because it’s so fast and efficient. For example, you can average hundreds of numbers in a matter of seconds!

This lesson demonstrates how to create basic formulas in Excel.

M&Ms Challenge

Do you like M&Ms? If yes, you will enjoy this yummy project while applying what you have learned in this module.

Warning: Do not eat your data until you have recorded it!

*

  • Find four small bags of M&Ms. If you don’t like M&Ms or don’t have any, refer to the Virtual Bag of M&Ms Video below. Skittles will work, too!
  • Open a new worksheet in your spreadsheet software.
  • In cells A3-F3, type the headings: COLORS, BAG 1, BAG 2, BAG 3, BAG 4, AVERAGE.
  • In cells A4-A12, type the following: Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Red, Yellow, TOTAL, MINIMUM, MAXIMUM.
  • Rename the worksheet MMFun.
  • Save the template as MMProject.
  • If using real M&Ms, open one bag at a time, sort by color, and enter numbers into the worksheet you just created.
  • If using virtual M&Ms, just enter numbers into the template. When you click on the bag, numbers will change. That will allow you to get enough data for four bags!
  • In cell B10, calculate the total for Bag 1. Hint: AutoSum
  • Extend the formula from cell B10 through cell E10.
  • In cell F4, calculate the average of Blue candy for all four bags. Hint: AVERAGE
  • Extend the formula from cell F 4 through cell F10.
  • In cell B11, calculate the least common candy in Bag 1. Hint: MIN
  • Extend the formula from B11 through E11.
  • In cell B12, calculate the most common candy in Bag 1. Hint: MAX
  • Extend the formula from B12 through E12.
  • Format worksheet using features of your choice.
  • Save the project again.
  • Get immediate feedback via M&Ms Project Solution Video below.
