Perception Matters

Why is perception important in the business world? Good communication can be affected by another person's perception of what is being said.

Perception is defined as the way you notice or understand something using one of your senses. Based on that perception, you make inferences that shape how you interpret a situation.

Perception in the Workplace

You probably have heard the saying that “perception is reality” but is the statement factual based on what you have discovered about cultural differences? When you consider the cultural component, you might agree that the statement is not factual. Why does perception matter in the workplace? It matters because the workforce is composed of individuals from different towns, cities, states, and countries. Everyone’s encounters and experiences are varied to include good and bad outcomes. Whether you realize it or not, your perception of those encounters and experiences regulate how you perceive things. View the video to obtain tips on how to improve your perception so that your observations are not based on a single trait, stereotypes, or projections.

Takeaway

The way you perceptualize will be different from others. Manage how you perceive by understanding that your reality is based on experiences you have encountered, which will be different from what others have experienced. Stop and examine your thoughts as you perceptualize. Ask yourself if your perception is a respectful analysis of the situation. Consider the tips provided in the lesson, such as providing authentic communication, being empathetic and positive, and having a determination to discover information about other cultures. Avoid stereotyping individuals which can lead to discrimination in your decision-making. Discrimination can cause you to violate laws that focus on civil rights, age, and genetic information, and other factors which can result in lawsuits.
