Individuals must make decisions daily that affect their lives. These decisions are usually based on personal values. Decisions made for a business must be made using the business's values as well.

Business Ethics

Each day individuals apply ethics to make decisions. The decisions are based on cultural experiences and values which vary based on where you live. When working in a business, it is important to apply the ethical standards of the company to achieve the established mission and purpose of the business. When faced with a situation, it is best to evaluate the problem and identify possible options. You should take into consideration all parties involved with the business and consider how the decision will impact them. The decision should also be based on what is right even if that decision is not a popular option. Finally, the decision should be in alignment with the goals and objectives of the business.

Applying Ethics in the Workplace

Ethical values such as honesty, fairness, and responsibility are common in many career fields. Ethical decisions will vary based on the profession; however, there are many practical steps you can take to be an ethical student and employee.

The Student Handbook or Code of Ethics (if you are employed) are helpful in providing guidelines but might not offer answers to assist in making difficult ethical decisions.
