Fake News?

Is Evolution True? Is there any support for it? You may hear people say that “evolution is just a theory”, but theory means something different in the scientific community. A theory means that there is much evidence to support the idea/explanation.

In this lesson, you will learn more about the types of evidence and examples that support the theory behind Evolution.

The Evidence

There are five major sources of evidence for evolution:

  1. Fossils
  2. Comparative Anatomy: Homologous Structures
  3. Cellular/Molecular Evidence
  4. Biogeography
  5. Direct Observation (covered in a later lesson)

Read through the presentation below to learn more about each one.

Evidence for Evolution Challenge and Before You Go

Practice Time! Use the knowledge you learned from the lesson to complete the practice activities below.

Before You Go - You Need To Know

The following key points are from the explore section of the lesson. You must know the following information before moving to the next lesson. This is just a summary of the key points.

  • What are the 5 types of evidence for evolution?
    1. Fossils,
    2. Comparative Anatomy: Homologous Structures;
    3. Cellular/Molecular Evidence;
    4. Biogeography;
    5. Direct Observation (covered in a later lesson)
  • True or False. The deeper down a fossil is found, the younger it is.
    • The deeper down a fossil is found, the older it is. The younger fossils are found closer to the top.
  • True or False. Evolution is just a theory with little evidence to support it.
    • False
