Take a cracker and begin chewing it in your mouth. Chew for about 30 seconds. What do you notice?
You may notice that the cracker starts to taste sweet. That is because the cracker is a carbohydrate. Carbohydrates are made up of sugars. The enzyme, amylase, is located in your mouth and breaks down starch into simple sugars.
Are Carbs Organic?
Carbon is found in all living things. They are called organic compounds. Inorganic compounds do not contain carbon.
So what about bread, crackers, fruit, and rice? Do they contain carbon?
