Behind the Scenes

Introduction:

Television broadcasting as we’ve seen is more than the glamour and being in front of the camera. It is also not limited to the huge networks, but it can be in your local schools. For many schools this is an opportunity for AVTF students to produce products that inform, but also to engage with the school community. In this micro lesson you will learn more about all it takes to create that short news broadcast.

Behind the Scenes-

Educational settings are being more and more organized and active in producing news shows in their schools. The video below offers an explanation of what it takes to produce a quality news show. Make note of how they implement the production process: pre-production, production, and post-production.

So, what are some of the stories being shared on television broadcasting news shows? Well, it depends on the type of show you are producing. Is it primarily an entertainment news show? Is it all news stories? Is it a mixture like our morning shows? Or is it much like traditional local and national news? As a producer, you have to determine which type of news show you want to create because each includes the basic story types, but equipment and style will be a factor.

Once you have determined the type of news show you want to produce, you have to get organized. The video provided a solid pre-production process of creating the live show script, and then the ‘battle’ board to track progress of each story.

Production of each news story requires an understanding of how to most effectively shoot the footage. For example, if you are filming sports highlights, you would want to make sure to use the correct camera and understand the best way to shoot and edit. In an interview, you would often see each party in a comfortable setting and an intimate conversation, while if you were out on location, you would see more of the community and ‘in the moment’ action.

Post-Production requires the editing to ensure that the story is having the impact intended. Of course, with a news story they are very short and to the point because of the time constraints. The producer wants to keep the attention of the viewer so that they don’t change the channel.
