Scale Degrees Microlesson
Introduction: Scale Degrees
Each one octave scale has 8 pitches that may be numbered accordingly. The “root” of the scale is given the number 1, and the numbering progresses upwards. We can also use scale degree names based on the pitches’ number. For the Major Scales, the degree names are:
- Tonic
- Supertonic
- Mediant
- Subdominant
- Dominant
- Submediant
- Leading Tone
- Tonic

Each scale may be numbered or labeled with scale degree names.
Notice that each name always corresponds to the exact number.
It is possible to refer to pitches according to their role and function that they hold within the scale.
It is easier to refer to pitches by the placement they hold within a key. Using the titles or names, of each step of the scale, aids in understanding their important role they have within the key.
