Globalization and Clash of Civilizations Lesson
Globalization is the increasing interaction of people, states, or countries through the growth of the international flow of money, ideas, and culture. Globalization is primarily an economic process of integration that has social and cultural aspects. It involves goods and services, and the economic resources of capital, technology, and data. The steam locomotive, steamship, jet engine, and container ships are some of the advances in the means of transport while the rise of the telegraph and its modern offspring, the Internet, and mobile phones show development in telecommunications infrastructure. All of these improvements we enjoy in the modern era have been major factors in globalization and have generated further interdependence of economic and cultural activities. Fragmentation (divisions based on ethnic or cultural identity) has also recently become important in world politics. Nationalism, identities based on nationhood, seemed to be declining in favor of increasing globalism. However, national identities remain strong in most parts of the world. The most dramatic is the politicization of religion that has dominated world politics of the early 21st century. For example, in the Middle East, political terrorism has been carried out in the name of Islam and caused tensions between Islamic and Christian states. This rise in ethnic or cultural politics tends to emphasize differences rather than commonalities. Make sure to read topics related to globalization and the clash of civilizations in your e-textbook.
