Close Reading of Candide

Introduction

As you read these two novels, remember that there are three different types of essays on the AP English Literature Exam:

1) the poetry response, 2) the prose response, and the 3) open-ended response.

In the previous two modules, we have focused upon the poetry response, and the open-ended response. For the next two lessons, we will shift our focus to the prose response in each novel.

Let's Review

Final Thoughts

You should notice that satire is Voltaire’s weapon of choice to point the ills of his age. Do recognize that a lot of the larger issues that Voltaire points out (inequality of wealth, the failure of the educational system, tensions with love) are issues that seem to have always plagued humanity. If you remember from the first module, the idea of theme or universal nature should be present as what helps to make a work have literary merit.
