Definitions for Novels
Introduction
In this lesson, we will look at three central terms that occur with novels: satire, social change, and sentimentality. These three terms will be important because they help to explain some of the purpose and difference in aesthetic tastes than we might be used to. Also we can see that a lot of modern day mass media has the same effect on the reader as novels from 200 years ago.

Final Thoughts
The rise of the novel depended upon mass marketing techniques and touched upon the rising middle class’s need for entertainment value in texts. However, the best of the genre still maintained a sense of social commentary and thematic awareness. In the next lessons, you will build upon your previously learned analysis skills with applications of complexity of character, ambiguity, and irony to the novel.
