TTP - Thee/Thou Poetry on the AP Exam Lesson
Thee/Thou Poetry on the AP Exam
Introduction
In this module, we have covered information on the nature of poetry, its technical devices, and an overview of older poetry in English. However, we now need to make connections to the AP English Exam, and focus upon authentic practice. The challenge section in this microlesson is particularly important because you will be using it to calibrate your own ideas of what constitutes quality AP level work.
Scoring of AP English Writing Prompts Overview
This presentation will examine a generic AP English Literature Rubric for poetry and emphasize key components at each level. In addition to each scoring level, some specific generalizations about scoring AP essays will be provided at the end. Prepare to take notes and ensure that your speakers are turned up.
Let's Review
See how well you understand poetry on the AP Exam. In the activity below, you will practice giving a score to four essays, before finding out what score the each essay actually received.
Final Thoughts
Poetry from the 16th to 18th century can be challenging, but not impossible. Specific tastes, styles, forms, and word choices might seem different, but human nature always stays constant.
When in doubt remember that concepts of literary merit (i.e. ambiguity, irony, universality, theme) haven’t changed much since the 16th century.
Always look for the bigger meaning and some simple truth about the human condition.
