Final Thoughts

In this module, you have explored some basic ideas about the aesthetics of literature by exploring what exactly makes a work of literature have literary merit. As you work through the rest of the course, use the ideas in this module as a starting point for analysis of any particular work, especially ones that you don’t understand or think are that well written.

An important final thought is that liking a literary work and appreciating its literary merit are two separate ways of viewing the work. Your task is not necessarily to like the literature, but to at least appreciate it.

Remember, if it is on the AP English Exam, there is a great chance that most people experienced with literature will see the work as having some type of literary merit.
